Project Overview
This 2015 Ford F-150 came in for some serious mechanical work, and the repair list was anything but short. With issues involving the truck’s twin-turbo system, exhaust components, and front brakes, there were several major areas that needed attention to get everything back into proper working order.
I replaced both turbochargers, both catalytic converters, and the turbo boost control valve to address critical components of the engine’s performance and exhaust systems. Twin-turbo engines pack a lot of power into a relatively small package, but getting to everything isn’t always easy. There’s plenty of plumbing, tight spaces, and components that need to come apart before the real work can begin.
On top of the engine-related repairs, I also replaced both front brake calipers, pads, and rotors. After all, having a truck that can get up and go is great, but making sure it can stop is just as important.
This project is a good example of the kind of larger, more involved repairs I take on at DJ Auto in Lonsdale, Minnesota. Whether it’s replacing major engine components or tackling multiple mechanical problems at once, my goal is to do the job right and help customers get more life out of the vehicles they already own.
Key Challenges
- Twin Turbocharger Replacement: Replacing both turbochargers required working around the F-150’s tightly packaged engine components, intake plumbing, and exhaust connections.
- Exhaust System Repairs: Both catalytic converters needed replacement, adding another major repair to an already extensive engine-related project.
- Turbo Boost Control: The turbo boost control valve also needed replacement to help the turbocharging system regulate boost pressure properly.
- Limited Engine Bay Access: Getting to multiple components in the turbo and exhaust systems meant carefully working through some tight spaces.
- Complete Front Brake Overhaul: Both front calipers, brake pads, and rotors needed replacement to restore the front braking system’s mechanical components.
- Coordinating Multiple Major Repairs: With significant work needed on the engine, exhaust, and brakes, the challenge was tackling each repair efficiently while keeping the entire project organized.
The Repair Process
1. Twin Turbocharger & Boost Control Replacement
2. Catalytic Converter Replacement
3. Front Brake System Overhaul
Results
This 2015 Ford F-150 received a major round of mechanical repairs, addressing several important systems in one project. Here’s what was accomplished:
- Two New Turbochargers: Both factory turbochargers were replaced, renewing the major components responsible for generating engine boost.
- Updated Boost Control: A replacement turbo boost control valve addressed an important part of the engine’s turbocharging system.
- Both Catalytic Converters Replaced: New converters refreshed key components of the truck’s exhaust emissions system.
- New Front Brake Calipers: Both front calipers were replaced to renew the components responsible for applying braking force.
- New Brake Pads & Rotors: Fresh front pads and rotors replaced the existing friction components for improved braking readiness.
- Multiple Major Repairs Completed Together: Engine, exhaust, and brake repairs were all handled as part of one comprehensive project.
- More Life Out of an Existing Truck: Addressing these major mechanical components helps support continued use of the F-150 without immediately turning to the expense of replacing the vehicle.
Some jobs are a quick fix. Others involve replacing two turbos, two catalytic converters, a boost control valve, and practically the entire front brake setup. This one definitely fell into the second category!
